Being an artist is about becoming comfortable with YOUR artistic choices.

Learning about yourself and your taste. Refining your skills to be able to match that taste.

Knowing when to push, and when to start over.

The rough concept for this piece was simple. But when I went to recreate it, there was just something off about the proportions and took away what I considered to be the mood of the piece.

I wanted his pose to reflect a certain emotionlessness. A “Jason” or “Michael Myers” vibe.

This is just another day for the Lone Gunman.

So after 2-3 attempts, I bluelined the original rough and used that as my template for the more refined pencils.

I then scanned those pencils in and tweaked them to be darker for use as my “inks”. And then I colored it.

I’ve enjoyed experimenting with texture and style here. The half tone, the wisp of wind/debris in white. The graphic, vibrant magenta splitting the scene, and dissipating like fog through the other half of the page.

I have no idea how this will impact my work moving forward, but I love what’s happened here.
