The downs

I’ve learned to embrace the downs
It’s an inevitability from my experience… depression, that is.
I was in my late 20s/early 30s before I realized that my mental state wasn’t “normal”. Although I question that more and more these days.
So I imagine, when I’m speaking on depression, that it isn’t rare at all.
The intensity and degree with which many of us endure this may vary. But I doubt there are many who haven’t experienced it to some degree.
I just don’t think we talk about it. Or acknowledge it. Or even realize there’s something to discuss.
We live there. Like fish in the water, unflinching of the natural state in which we exist.
But I’ve become well aware of it. I can see it approaching. I can feel its embrace in the depths of my being.
I’ve learned not to resist it, nor allow it to wear out its welcome.
It’s a family member that must be entertained for a period of time. If for no other reason than to be reminded of where I came from and where I have no desire to return.
The tasks looming ahead must be taken on and conquered. Moving forward is a necessity.
Just with more awareness. More patience. More introspection.
These times are a nice reset. It’s a chance to dive into the deep end and remember not to flail, but to float, eyes to the sky, calmed by the stillness.
Moments like these always precede leaps of growth. So I’ll take the downs while they’re here, knowing they’ll never own me again.
