What many don’t understand, is that art is about storytelling.

It’s not just about LOOKING COOL.

And it ALL matters. Even, and surprisingly, what you DON’T put in.

These Hero Hands that I started a few months back is as much about the negative space as they are about the hands themselves.

That negative space brings impact to the simplicity of the hands. All of the attention is on JUST the hand. The page isn’t filled with a bunch of randomness.

Now could it be cool to focus on the hand in the same way, but fill in where the body would be? Where she’s standing? What’s around her? Absolutely.

But in that we would also tell a story. Is she in the city? Or the jungle? Or maybe in the sewer? If she is, what can we put in that environment to help tell the story of why she’s there? What is she wearing? Is it clean? Tattered? Was she just in a fight?

It all matters. In the best art, it allllllllllll matters.

Casey Marie Jones understands this. Do you? 😉
