Keep coming back for more

NGL… I must have been a different person when I drew this.

If you’re an artist, you have undoubtedly had moments where you created something well beyond your current skill level. A piece that shocks you with how easily you produced it, and the quality of the outcome.

It feels like a fluke.

Now maybe you’re not impressed with this, or you don’t see what I see. But for me, this one was magic.

I draw decent hair, but it can often be a struggle to make long hair appear light and flowy for me. This hair is about as close as I’ve ever done to capturing that vibe.

I draw decent females, but capturing their femininity as well as their strength is a tough balancing act. This pose wasn’t one I’ve done many times, and maybe ever with a female, yet here it is, clean as it gets.

Female hands can be a struggle for me as well. I draw SO MANY dudes, and my hands tend to already be excessively rugged. So going in the opposite direction can be a mind shift that takes some real effort. Yet this hand of Jean’s came out almost immediately.

When my Dad and I would go golf, it was usually a disastrous and chaotic endeavor. But there was always one or two great strikes of the ball that he would inevitably respond, “That one was good enough to bring us back again.”

That’s all it takes to keep us coming back for more. One great moment among a litany of failure that shows us what we’re capable of.
