If you dig deep enough into any artist, you can find the direct influence from every other artist they wanted to imitate.
@_jesswathen is a phenomenal artist for many reasons. But his use of color in particular is phenomenal. TRUE mastery. The kind of understanding, in that particular area of the craft, that I’m always seeking.
So after a chat I decided to try my hand at painting using some of Jess’ approach. In particular by using a fluorescent wash with the intention of leaving a border around the figure to stand out.
I think I chose the wrong background color to really make that hot pink work. I’m assuming I should have done a color that was lighter in value. Maybe just the wrong color choice altogether? I’m not sure. But I’m excited to try again.
I ended up eliminating the pink border and adding a hot pink bounce light to bring that extra depth in from underneath. This also complimented the wash that was poking out from behind all those paint layers.
The rain was decided last minute to better set the mood. 😉
