The hardest part about inking is keeping a similar vibe and energy as the pencils.

I have SOOO much to still learn in this realm. I’m still sorting out the tools I prefer. I’m still weak in my shadow choices. I’m still developing my style.

I’ll never be a classic comic inker. Those OG greats that have masterful feathering, insane brush control, line work that looks impossible to get in a single stroke.

So I’m not really TRYING to go that route. Instead, I’ve chosen to follow my understanding of the principles that make shape and form and pair that with my personal natural instincts that make drawing enjoyable for me.

My hands and brain are often in conflict. The results I WISH I could attain are different from how my artistic personality prefers to work when I’m seeking to maximize the enjoyment.

I can easily OBSESS over “perfection”. Hyper clean lines. No mistakes. Getting all of the things mastered in the way I described before.

But what my hands enjoy artistically is a more frenetic movement. Quicker decisions. Simple pen choices. If I’m honest, WAY less “proper technique”.

But over the years, I’ve also learned that part of being an artist is embracing YOUR way of doing things.

Over 15 years ago I once said, “Technique is for those scared to discover one.”

Doing things “right” has its place. But showing the world the purest expression of yourself can be a major weapon against any supposed lack of skill.
