Born Lucky

Here’s how I got lucky:

Pretty much all during school I spent drawing instead of doing my work. My earliest memory is drawing planes in pre K.

After school I often spent a big chunk of my free time drawing, studying, practicing. I graduated with a 1.7 GPA and purposely did only the bare minimum to keep my grades up.

Starting at 23 I spent the next 13 years working as a full time freelance artist.

I did abstract art, portraits, graphic design, photography, videography, music production, film production, editing, and anything else creative that would help me pay the bills (barely) and keep food on the table.

After a 4ish year break from burnout, I came back to comics in Feb 2021.

I got on social media and drew for 30 minutes+ every single day Live on TikTok. I drew requested characters from my audience and responded to every single comment. I went from 200 followers to 10,000+ within a few months.

At the 6 month mark I posted a video showing every piece of art I did in that time, and talked about the importance of drawing daily. It did well on TT and hit 300k+ views.

That same video was picked up by an IG page that shared it and did 5 million views. My IG went from 6-700 to 2.5k followers within a few days.

Since then I have continued to work Live and post that work almost daily. I share my work in as many places as possible and continue to do my best to respond to every comment and private message sent.

I now have 175k total supporters across social media.

I spend 3+ hours every day posting, responding to comments, and sharing my work. I talk honestly about myself, my struggles, and my fascination with the psychology of art.

I’m nowhere close to what I believe I’m capable of. I have tons of plans for growing and expanding my audiences. I know brand deals, bigger gigs, and high profile work is inevitable. But only because I know I’m going to continue to work.

Anyway… that’s how I got lucky. Guess I was just born with it.
