Are you telling the story

Sometimes even great poses need the boot.

I spent a good portion of my adulthood as a video editor. Music videos, short films, political ads, etc.

And one valuable lesson it taught me, that perfectly transfers into my comic art, was the importance of shot selection.

Having an amazing shot means nothing if it doesn’t relate to the story being told.

The first Batman drawn was awesome. It was on its way for sure, but it was just nagging me. It didn’t matter how bad ass it looked, it wasn’t telling the right story.

See, this 11” x 17” piece will be surrounded by the 12 6” x 9” Batman Villains I did earlier this year.

Batman will be surrounded by the meanest of the mean. A swarm of baddies ready to end his life.

So having any kind of passive, relaxed, calm pose would do no justice to the final image. He needed to look fierce! Unafraid! Pumped! VENGEANCE personified!

So to the cutting room floor the first piece went, and the soon to be final piece evolved.

Greatness requires hard decisions. And cutting out everything in your life that detracts from YOUR story is critical to your success. I promise, it’s all you need.
