An aspiring artist

I met @mad_strom, a young talented artist at Wondercon

She had some ok skill in her general drawing ability, but her coloring/rendering was an undeniable significant strong suit. So I gave her three older pieces of mine to see how she’d fare.

I think many aspiring comic artists these days think they have to be able to do it all. And while it’s a worthy goal, it’s not necessary or tbh, very realistic.

Pencils, inks, colors ALL take a significant amount of time to develop. And even once you learn the fundamentals, it takes even longer to develop a style.

Focusing on all three can actually hinder your progress in any one of them. There is only so much time and brain power available.

I would highly encourage choosing the skill you enjoy the most, and diving into that skill with your whole being. You will level up so much more quickly, and empower yourself to find work far more easily.

Once you’ve mastered that skillset, then you can expand and possibly begin to develop in other areas.

If you dig her colors here, give her a follow and some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Maybe throw her some work or some suggestions of art to color.

Who knows, maybe she’ll color one of my upcoming covers… 😉
